Welcome to Child Development!
This course offers students the opportunity to develop a positive understanding of the growth and development of children. Class activities also emphasize the responsibilities and challenges of parenting. In addition, Broomfield High School Child Development students will actively apply techniques for working with children by running Little Eagles' Play School.
This course focuses on growth and development from conception through early childhood (specific attention from birth to age three). Students will investigate developmental theories, applications, and issues relating to infant/toddler development. The following units will be covered in the course: (1) Parenting Styles and Responsibilities; (2) Conception and Fetal Development; (3) Prenatal Care, Birth, and Delivery; (4) Theories of Child Development; (5) Health, Safety, and Environmental Influences; (6) Learning Experiences and Early Intervention; (7) Developmentally Appropriate Activities; and (8) Play School Evaluation and Participation. In addition to facilitating the Little Eagles' Play School, each student will be assigned an "Infant Simulator" to care for during the semester. These two experiential learning components account for 25% of the student's grade.
STUDENTS: If you are absent, check the course agenda provided below to see what you missed and follow along within our Schoolgy classroom for access to your assignments. There are also a few more helpful documents provided at the bottom of this page.
PARENTS, GUARDIANS, & FAMILY: As this course focuses on families and the development of children, some assignments will encourage students to reflect on their own experiences (and/or inquire family members about theirs). There is so much learning that will happen outside of our classroom through these meaningful conversations at home. Thank you in advance for your support of this investigation and discovery.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me by email.
